Summer Internship Lab and Equipment
Every year 1.5 million people suffer a heart attack, one third of those are fatal. Heart attacks kill more people each year than all forms of cancers combined, it is the number one killer in the United States. Jane Doe, a Principle Investigator and her lab group are developing a drug/treatment that will lessen the damage to heart tissue caused by heart attacks
Jane Doe and her lab group are working towards a treatment for reperfusion (reestablishing blood flow to ischemic tissue) injury. In order to develop this treatment the lab focused their attention on the biochemical pathways that result in apoptosis (regulated cell death) of cardiomyocytes. That summer I worked on a project that increased our knowledge about one particular biochemical pathway believed to be directly involved in apoptosis Bid is a protein believed to play an important role in the biochemical pathway that results in the death of cardiomyocytes My project involved creating a mutant form of the Bid protein, introducing this protein into adult cardiomyocytes and establishing whether or not Bid has been cleaved. In order to accomplish this task I would use an array of biomolecular lab equipment and techniques.
The work accomplished that summer was both challenging and rewarding. I always take such pleasure in learning. My knowledge base is now richer than ever before. This experience sent me home with a new found vigor and confidence. My experience that summer was everything that I imagined and more. I was able to take so much away from this experience and for that I am truly grateful. The physical plant, facilities and labs were amazing. Everyday spent at a Scripps facility or event reminds you that you are in a special place among special people. The entire Scripps community exudes intelligence and competence rivaled by very few establishments am I sure.

School Garden
With help from my colleagues, the school administration, parents and students a school garden located between the Science and English wings was born. It provides students' the opportunity to experience and learn about nature first hand. It is also a potential canvas for lab work and science projects. In its first year, students donated over 50 pounds of food to the local Caring Kitchen.
Summer 2012 Trip
This, the second long summer trip was 59 days in total. We drove through 25 states, covering 12,866 miles. My wife, 4 kids and a "nanny" camped in 18 of those 25 states but unlike 2009 we stayed in travel trailer every night. This trip we explored 12 more National Parks, with Olympic National being one of favorites
Summer 2009 Trip
This was our first long summer trip. We spent 64 days on the road, traveling over 15,000 miles. Most of these nights were spent camping in a tent with my wife, 3 kids and a nanny. We drove through 21 states, camping in 12 of them. We explored 7 popular National Parks. Yosemite and the Oregon coast were among our most favorite.
European Travels
In the summer of 1999 before kids my wife and spent the better part of that summer back packing around Europe. We traveled by train through 8 countries and stayed in youth hostels along the way. Inspired after a haircut from my Italian barber, a week later my wife and I landed in Belgium with a backpack of clothes, a Europass (train ticket), Fromers Travel Guide and absolutely no plan! The picture quality is poor since they are 35mm pics that have been scanned...oh well

Summer Trip 2014
Once again the Morone clan headed north and west. This trip was just over 11,000 miles and not quite 8 weeks in duration. Although exploration is always top of our priorities, this year we tried to include some more relaxing moments and down time. We had a slow start with 6 tire changes but eventually made it to New Orleans, then to Dallas, through to New Mexico and then Flagstaff where we really started our trip. After northern Arizona we worked our way to the central coast of California where we went to some familiar places and some new. The trip then proceeded up the California and Oregon coast with brief stop to check out Coravlis and Eugene Oregon. The next leg of the trip went back to the coast in the Astoria Oregon and Long Beach Washington Area. The next part of trip was however our favorite. For more than a week we explored the San Juan, Islands and North Cascades in northern Washington. It was here that we finally turned to the southeast and began our trek home. Going home we explored Ellensburg, Washington, Missoula, Montana and one of old favorites Yellowstone. Our trip home from here included a lot areas we had yet to explore like Laramie, Wyoming, Salina, Kansas, Branson Missouri and Merdian, Mississippi.
Summer Trip 2018
The Morone clan headed north and west for maybe the last time with the entire family. This trip was not quite as long as others, only 6 weeks in duration. The trip this year had a final destination in mind...Banff, Canada. Knowing that it might our last trip with all the kids we chose a brand new route. Our first stop would be Savannah, Georgia and then on to Great Smoky National Park. From the Smokies we traveled north through Tennessee, Kentucky. and Ohio. While in Ohio we had to check out Cedar Point, perhaps the best amusement park ever. Heading due west from there for a short time, followed by a hard right turn to the north we explored Michigan and the Upper Penisula. The next leg of the trip took us due west into Minnesota and North Dakota both of which were surprisingly cool! Moving west once again we had to stop at a Morone favorite...Montana. Glacier National Park was as incredible as we remembered it to be.It was now time to head north into Canada for the first time. We established a base camp between Calgary and Banff, from there we were able explore Banff, Jasper and Yoho National Parks not mention Calgary and some other smaller towns. SLIDESHOW COMING SOON!
