Distant Learning for MYP Biology
8/17/20
Hope for the best, plan for the worst. In other words, I will plan for an entire year of distance learning and you should as well. If we go back to school next month or next semester I will transition us accordingly. In the meantime, with no opening in sight, this plan represents a complete year of distance learning. I have developed a plan that is both consistent and repetitive so that we may get accustomed to the "new normal". A repetitive routine will allow us to continue moving forward should you or I become ill in the future. If you are unable to attend class due an illness or if I am unable to instruct you, the students will more apt and better prepared to continue independently learning.
The MYP Biology curriculum consists of 8 units. We so many unknowns, we will simply start on Unit One and move forward in numerical order. I will be responsible for setting and maintaining an appropriate pace. This course will utilize two primary sources: TheBioEdge.com (my website) and Google Classroom. Each unit of instruction will involve the same series of steps which culminate in an end of the unit assessment.
The State/County provides a unit overview at the start of each unit. This will be our first step to introduce each unit. The second step involves instruction through lecture and discussion. I will use varipous videos but all will be succinct, accurate and topic appropriate. We will watch the lecture together and you may ask questions along the way or at the videos completion. Once we feel that we have understanding of the material we will move to the third step. Next I will provide you with a series of questions multiple choice and/or short answers to check for understanding. These questions will relate directly to the lecture material and serve as a formative assessment. After all students have completed questions (approx 5 or 6), I will provide answers, explanations and encourage discussions. The fourth step is dependent upon the classes performance on those questions, if identify areas of concern or weaknesses I will reteach the material myself. These 4 steps will be repeated for each subtopic until the entire unit is completed.
At the completion of each "whole unit" students will take a multiple choice assessment called "Progress Checks". These Progress Checks will be graded but because they are multiple choice and will likely consist of only 10-20 questions we should have time to discuss them as final review before the Unit Exam. The Unit Exams will be a Free Response Question with multiple parts. Finally we need to incorporate some labs into each unit. As long as we are learning digitally our labs will be virtual or they will involve an activity either of which should allow us to address the necessary science skills. These "labs" can take place before we start a unit, during the unit or at the completion of the unit.

Next I will provide you with a series of questions multiple choice and/or short answer questions. These questions will relate directly to the lecture material and serve as a formative assessment. After all students have completed questions (approx 5 or 6), I will provide answers, explanations and encourage discussions.
Formative Topic Questions Multiple Choice / Short Answer
Step Four:
The fourth step is dependent upon the classes performance on those questions from step three, should I identify areas of concern or weaknesses I will reteach the material myself using my own powerpoints these powerpoints are tools for me to reteach you do not have know all this material.
See Unit 7
These 4 steps will be repeated for each subtopic until the entire unit is completed.
Step Five:
At the completion of each "whole unit" students will take a multiple choice assessment called "Progress Checks". These Progress Checks will be graded but because they are multiple choice and will likely consist of only 10-20 questions we should have time to discuss them as final review before the Unit Exam.
Progress Check
Step Six:
Students will take a Unit Eleven Exam
Unit Eleven Exam
UNIT ELEVEN LAB
Each unit will have one or more virtual labs or activities that will support various science skills. These "labs" can take place before we start a unit, during the unit or at the completion of the unit.
Unit Eleven Lab(s) or Activity(s)
Unit Twelve: Growth & Development
Step One:
FLDOE provides a unit overview at the start of each unit. We look at this together and I will provide an opening lecture to introduce the topics.
Unit Twelve Outline
Step Two:
Watch instructional videos provided below. The instructional videos are from Paul Anderson's Bozeman Biology. These videos are applicable to Topics 1-4. These videos are succinct, accurate and topic appropriate. We will watch the lecture together and you may ask questions along the way or at the videos completion. Once we feel that we have understanding of the material we will move to the third step.
Topic 1 Teen Dating Violence
Topic 2 Consent and Gender
Topic 3 Human Reproduction
Topic 4 Contraception & STI's

Week Eight
Well here we are, week eight. Ladies and Gentlemen after a rather long and difficult week seven, this week will be your easiest! You will have a one assignment this week, it is the Human Growth and Development Lesson put together by the county, although it is mandatory it is also only a completion grade. This lesson and the directions will be posted in the next day or two.
Mr. Hock, Mr Chadwick and myself are planning on providing a make work window for all students who would like the opportunity to complete a missing assignment. This window will occur next weekend or into the week nine. If you are planning to do make up an assignment you should do it this week that way all you have to do is submit when the window opens. This also means you would enjoy the last week off since there are no final exams.
