Syllabus for AP Environmental
The AP Environmental curriculum consists of 9 units. This course will utilize two primary sources: AP Classroom (College Board) and TheBioEdge (my website). Each unit of instruction will involve the same series of steps which culminate in an end of the unit assessment.
College Board provides a unit overview at the start of each unit. We look at this together and I will provide an opening lecture to introduce the topics, the Enduring Understandings, the Learning Objectives and the Essential Knowledge. This will be our first step to introduce each unit.
The second step involves instruction through lecture, discussion and practice problems. We will use short videos from YouTube, AP Classroom and various clips that I have provided.videos provided by College Board. These videos will act as catalysts for discussion, questions and help reinforce concepts and ideas. We will watch the videos together. Throughout the videos we will pause, rewind or even forward through them and as they will provide a back drop for my lectures. I encourage you to ask questions along the way or at the videos completion.
Once we feel that we have understanding of the material we will move to the third step. I will provide you with questions from College Board and possibly short answer questions created by me. These questions will relate directly to the lecture material and serve as a formative assessment.
After all students have completed questions, I will provide answers, explanations and encourage discussions. This exercise will also include in depth look at test taking strategies, both general and specific to the AP exam.
The fourth step is dependent upon the classes performance on formatives, if I identify areas of concern or weaknesses I will reteach the material myself. Also, this step allows students to address any specific issues they may be having on the unit. These 4 steps will be repeated for each subtopic until the entire unit is completed.
At the completion of each "whole unit" students will take a multiple choice assessment called "Progress Checks" provided by College Board. These Progress Checks are multiple choice in nature and will likely consist of only 10-20 questions we should have time to discuss them as final review before the Unit Exam.
The Unit Exams will consist of a Multiple Choice section and a Free Response Question(s).
Finally at some point during the unit I will incorporate some lab(s) or activity(s) into each unit. They may include any of the following: a prescribed "cook book" lab, open ended labs, virtual labs and activities. These "labs" can take place before we start a unit, during the unit or at the completion of the unit.

Step Two:
Watch instructional videos provided below. These videos are applicable to Topics 1.1-1.11. These videos are succinct, accurate and topic appropriate. These videos are not intended to be stand alone avenues of instruction they are simply a platform for learning. Having said that, if you are need of stand alone lecture then I would suggest that you watch the videos provided by College Board on AP Classroom.
These are not ideal by themselves but far better than the alternatives when you have to learn without classroom instruction. To view these videos log into your AP Classroom and you find them listed by Unit and Unit subheadings. *Note: the teacher must assign them in order for you to have access.

Step Five:
At the completion of each "whole unit" students will take a multiple choice assessment called "Progress Checks" provided by College Board. These Progress Checks will be graded but because they are multiple choice and will likely consist of only 10-20 questions we should have time to discuss them as final review before the Unit Exam.

Step Six:
Students will take a Unit Seven Exam
Unit Seven Exam
UNIT SEVEN LAB
Each unit will have a lab(s) and/or activity(s) that will support various science skills. These "labs" can take place before we start a unit, during the unit or at the completion of the unit.
Unit Seven Lab(s) or Activity(s)
College Board provides a unit overview at the start of each unit. We look at this together and I will provide an opening lecture to introduce the topics, the Enduring Understandings, the Learning Objectives and the Essential Knowledge.
